The iron age work hole that gave this body of water its name was all that it was when the club first had the chance to fish it. The lower Wirgol I was opened in 1985 under the direction of Henry Russell, the water management officer at the time. After great effort by Henry and his merry crew, the upper Wirgol II was inaugurated a year later. Members from the 1990s may recall that a bale of barley straw was often seen floating about during the summer since it assisted in solving the issues brought on by algae blooms.
The Wirgol I dam was rebuilt in 2005, which also contributed to an increase in water capacity. Despite the fact that there are many other riches swimming about under the surface, carp fishermen have long enjoyed both waterways.
Between March 15 and May 31 inclusive, this water is blocked.
